MESSAGE FROM THE IFFS PRESIDENT CLAUDINO DE JESUS
The General Assembly of the International Federation of Film Societies - IFFS - is the largest democratic exercise of governance, when its members set the goals and select the leaders who will implement them together with the associated countries. In 2013 we celebrate the centenary of the world film societies movement (Cinéma du Peuple (Paris) 1913). The General Assembly is part of a larger event that includes the World Film Societies Forum, with highlights for the Arab World film societies movement and especially Tunisia.
The events will be conducted from 01 to 07 April 2013 and will be of paramount importance for the world film societies movement because it is the first time that the IFFS will conduct its General Assembly in Africa, and notably in the Arab world. This GA confirms our organisation's interest beyond Europe, encouraging the expansion of its membership and activities to all continents.
We emphasize that it is symbolically striking and deeply conscious that our main event is held in Tunisia in the year of the centennial celebration of the international film society movement - especially in the present revolutionary circumstances of the collective construction and deepening of Tunisian democracy.
Democracy is for us a universal value that unites us and affirms our commitments to the public, their rights and, more specifically, their right to access audiovisual works from all cultures, genres, trends and nationalities, always celebrating the rich cultural diversity of our people.
PLANNING OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY
The Tunisian Federation of Film Societies suggests a one-week-long meeting in order to ensure the depth and conscientiousness of the General Assembly’s work. We are trying to resume a tradition that would make of this assembly an occasion to strengthen the ties between the different actors of the international movement of film society .
Every day will be divided in two work periods: morning and afternoon. The evenings will have a festive aspect, being centred on film societies’ fundamental activity: the screening-debate of movies. The seven days of the general assembly represent ten periods of work that will be organised as the following:

WORLD FORUM OF FILM SOCIETIES
The World Summit would tackle four fundamental themes:
I. The centenary of the global film society movement
II. The film society movement in the Africa & Arab World
III. The film society movement in Tunisia
As part of the exchange of competences on the subject of film society movement, numerous workshops ( facilitating debates , strategic planning , training of film societies moderators) and seminars ( having for main theme the cinematographic culture and the contribution of a cinematographic language in facilitating movie analysis) will be held in parallel to the other activities.
The International Cultural Center of Hammamet will host the work of this general assembly.

I. The centenary of the global film society movement, 6th April
The World Forum of Film Societies. Round table on the centennial of cineclubism
Although there is not a written history of the film societies movement, people were used to consider that cineclubs began in the twenties, after the Louis Delluc’s Journal du Cinéclub. In fact, that was a revue that promoted sparse events with film exhibitions. Undoubtedly, the name cinéclub – which is much older (the first film theater in Paris, the Omnia Pathé, had one ciné-club, but it was a gathering of the so called industry, to promote the new business) – spread not only in France but all over the world during that third decade of the century, but the actual activity has its roots long before.
The recognition of cineclubism after those societies founded by Delluc or Riciotto Canudo is probably explained by the fact that they were led by and directed to cultivated people, and their activities could be translated into rich speeches or cultivated texts, and their screenings frequented by important personalities. These “qualities” made then recognizable by the Academy.
But cineclubs have their roots far before that. Specially among workers clubs and societies, the use of magic lanterns to illustrate conferences and debates was common since the last quarter of the nineteenth century. With the arrival of the cinematograph, it was quickly adopted to promote mutual aid, cultural enhancement and entertainment among workers, immigrants and the community in general. Rapidly it evolved from a tool to improve discussions to the center of the discussions. And that was cineclubism.
The commemoration of our centenary is based on the first well documented organization that associated people in a democratic way to see, discuss and even produce film. In 1913, in Paris, was created the Cinema du People – the People’s Cinema: an anarchist cooperative organized to create a people’s cinema, since commercial films seemed to only distract, mislead and alienate people. Their motto, which didn’t lose any actuality, was: To Entertain, Educate and Emancipate!
To present and discuss the historical aspects of this century of cineclubism and its relations to the history of moving images, this round table will be led by Gabriel Rodríguez, film historian and theorist of international recognition, from the Sorbonne University; Germain Lacasse, specialist in oral practices in the cinema device, from the University of Montréal, Gabiel Rodríguez, researcher of the History of film societies' movement in the UNAM (Mèxico) and Felipe Macedo, whose studies focus on public and cineclubism, and is director of the Memorial da América Latina of São Paulo. Moderated by Paolo Minuto ex IFFS president. Some other guests will interfere through the web.

Sa mission est d’y défendre les positions officielles quant aux dossiers traités par la ligue. Mais la conjonction de plusieurs événements aussi bien d’ordre social que privé va ébranler la fidélité de Kh’lil à son parti.
